We now have in supply Insulated Backflow Covers.
Do I need to do anything to my backflow prevention assembly during the winter season?Yes. We may live in North Florida and never get as cold as the picture above but we do get cold enough to wreak havoc on our backflow preventer assemblies. There are several things you can do to protect your assembly during the winter season. If your backflow preventer does suffer from freeze damage there is a chance that the unit will be unrepairable and will need to be replaced. Replacement, as well as repairs, can be costly.
Here are the most commonly used options for preventing freeze damage which can lead to costly repairs or replacement: 1. Cover the device with a fake rock which will usually have no insulation inside, insulated cover/hot box, thermal insulation bag, even towels and shirts are adequate enough to protect the assembly from freezing. If you decide to go with one of these options you will need to know the measurments of your assembly. You will need to know how high off the ground the assembly is at the hightest point as well as how wide it is. We are now helping you protect your device with a Thermal Cover. 2. Run water inside the house during hard freeze warnings. We recommend that you run water out of two locations in the house to provide adequate flow throughout the device to keep it from freezing. However, during a hard freeze there is still a chance that the assembly will freeze if not covered.
3. A freeze protection valve installed past the #2 shut off valve is a fair way to protect your assembly on mildly chilly nights. We would not recommend relying on this type of protection alone on nights where it will be very cold. We have had customers' assemblies freeze and acquire damage even when the freeze protection valve was installed. Its not a sure thing. But it is required by The City of Tallahassee and other governing agencies. Check with your local government. If your freeze protection device is leaking click here for more info.

What do I do during the other seasons? Spring, Summer and Fall....
There is nothing really that needs to be done other than during winter. You can keep your covering on all year long. If you wrapped your device with towels or shirts the material may begin to biodegrade in the sun.
